One Week Left

I started a new story this month—like actually planning. It had been a seed since last year (which isn’t saying much since December wasn’t all too long ago) but now I have pages of handwritten plans. These pages are in a small notebook. I usually don’t do handwritten because I’m truly a computer-aged gal, but this time I find writing the plans out to be easier for my brain to wrap around all the data.

I have a list of victims for my serial killer, a list of details from each scene, descriptions, police schedules, command centers, and a crudely drawn map of the city with the districts shaded out and numbered. (Clearly this is a police story.)

This notebook has my name in it. This notebook is in my binder for class. This notebook is taken to every class at the police academy.

I realized last night that I could lose this notebook in class, and I don’t know if anyone will see the notes and think “Ah a writer. They’re so unique.” They’ll probably think, “So this is why she’s in this class...” and I’ll have a lengthy talk with the instructor or get a lot of weird looks until April.

The risks I take.

Anyway. In just one week, my first book is released! I'm so excited and nervous.

What's in a name?

I’m picky about what I name characters. I’ll search names for the right meaning and/or sound. For Undercover Sins, I chose some of my names carefully.
Demetrius has a Greek heritage that is often referred to, so I needed a Greek name for him. I’ve always been a fan of the name Demetrius, so I used it with a smile. I chose this name for the heritage and sound, not for the meaning.
Tynin was used for Ty simply because it could be shortened and Ty seemed plausible for a prostitute. His actual name, Gabriel, was chosen for the meaning. Gabriel is a hero name and the character certainly tries to be one.
Ty’s Lieutenant was simply named Lesley because I liked the sound of the name with his rank. Lieutenant Lesley just rolls off of the tongue.
Demetrius’s bodyguard was named Lee for no reason other than it was short, and flowed well with the nickname he often uses for Demetrius: Dem. It has no special meaning behind it.

In other stories, I’m far more obsessive with names, but it always comes down to how each name sounds with the other names I’ve chosen. This is all a matter of personal opinion though. How one name pairs with another could be drastically different for each reader and/or writer. I often fall back on favorites to name characters as well.

Last March I needed a new book series to read while traveling. I went to the mystery section in a bookstore and picked a book based entirely on the main character’s name. I’m not even joking. His full name had three parts and each name was a favorite of mine so I knew I’d love the series. Luckily, it turned out that I did enjoy the series, but I’m sure if the character had been bestowed with less favorable names, I would have moved down the shelf and chose a series set in modern day since I rarely pick up 1800s settings. His name just couldn't be ignored in that instance.

Does anyone else have a name they love so much that they’ll pick up a book based on just that?

Coming Soon

Undercover Sins
 Cover art by Paul Richmond

Police officer Gabriel Carter refuses to walk away from an assignment without seeing it through. So when he goes into deep cover as a male prostitute named Ty, he intends to do everything in his power to see his case to an arrest. He seduces his mark, Demetrius Prado, the second most powerful man in Las Vegas and a human trafficker, but the man is nothing like he expected.

The more Gabriel learns about Demetrius, the more twists and turns are thrown his way in the convoluted case leading to Demetrius’s rival, Arden, and beyond. It’s a case of mistaken identities and layer after layer of trumped-up cover stories, and Gabriel is sure there’s no way he’ll ever be able to trust Demetrius with his life… much less with his heart.

Now up on Dreamspinner Press

This is me excited!

My little bio is now listed on Dreamspinner Press website: here

I also have the cover for my book. Once everything is confirmed, I'll post it with the blurb. I think it has finally, just now, sunk in that this is really happening. I'm very excited for March now.

It seems like I’ve gone missing...

But I’m still here, I swear. Life got a little crazy there for a while and doesn’t show signs of stopping. I think I need a way to better organize my life...

I’m from NM, USA and we’re usually fairly warm for winter. Lows in the 20s (-6 Celsius) and highs in the lovely 60s (15 Celsius). For the last few days we’ve been enjoying the snow apocalypse storm that has been ravaging the nation. Temperatures here got as low as, if not lower, -9 (-22 Celsius) and only as high as 10 (-12 Celsius). That’s my city of course. Other parts of the state are worse off.
Cold is very damaging to my writing muses. I should move to Arizona...but heat ruins my muses as well.

On the writing front:
I’m in the midst of my second rounds of edits with Dreamspinner Press. It would be going faster if I didn’t catch a cold from a six-year-old on Sunday. NyQuil makes a terrible editing partner. (but a great bed partner) I foolishly didn’t cite a source for a statistic when I wrote this story last February so now I need to check the fact and can’t find it. I remember it was difficult to find to begin with since no one wants anyone to know how many children are kidnapped in their state. I don’t believe the time frame was a year though. I want to say it was a weekly number I used but I want evidence before I say that.

I also got my cover sketch art work! I meant to post about that earlier but life and whatnot. I do love it and can’t wait for the finished piece. I’ll share that when I can! I’m so excited! My biography is up on Dreamspinner Press now too. I don’t have the link handy but I will post it when I can. I’m not very prepared for this post, am I?

I’m really anxious for March and the release date!
