The problems winter present

Sure, New Mexico doesn’t get negative or near zero temperatures, but my body is set for temperatures above 50F. Even in the summer, if I’m in a building with refrigerated air, I freeze and put on a sweater. My day job coworker and boss have grown used to me over the years so they don’t question the parka I keep at my desk.

Winter presents a unique problem I’m just getting my arms around. Usually I love winter and prefer it over the summer. For one, I don’t look like a dingbat when I’m wrapped up for the arctic chill, but mainly I would rather be cold than hot. I typically just bundle up (love me some scarves!) or grab a blanket if I’m at home. This year I’ve discovered the joy of a space heater.

I found one in the back when I cleaned the fax machine room and immediately placed it under my desk. I use a room space heater for my bathroom at home and love it so one at my feet while I work the 8 to 5 day job? it should be glorious!

So my day now goes like this:

Me: I’m so cold...
(Reaches under desk and flips heater on)
Me: Ahh. Better.
(Five minutes later)
Me: My legs feel like they’re burning off and my arms have goose bumps.
(Reaches below and turns heater off)
Me: I miss the cooking sensation...

Rinse and repeat about twenty times a day.

I honestly can’t remember a winter this cold. Anyone from a climate used to cold temperatures have any advice for this desert bee?

My life just got busier

On top of editing and writing one story I want to get out by February, and edits for the book due out in March (that will be arriving soon), I'll be attending the Citizen Police Academy. I'm very excited. The class is two nights a week and will go over all units in the department. It ends with a ride-along. This will be amazing, I'm sure.

January brings change

Writing:
The life and movement of plot bunnies are amazing. I’m trying to make it a habit to write their chattering down for future reference instead of relying on my memory and failing. They always tend to strike when I’m far too busy at my day job to concentrate or I’m driving and I can’t write anything down. (I’m not that talented)

I received some correspondence from the publisher about my manuscript. The editing process has started and I’m excited about seeing my work fully marked up in red. (I’m serious) I expect I’m the thorn in the editor’s side since I’m not the best when it comes to grammar or punctuation. I try my best but often my mind sees correct when there isn’t anything correct about the sentence. (I’m sure this is the human brain, not just mine)

Life:
This weekend I made the decision to turn off my cable TV. I’m without television and so far I don’t miss it. It took up a lot of my time with mindless surfing. I was a slave to reruns of Family Guy, COPS, NCIS, and anything showing when I’d sit down to surf. I think I’ll accomplish more things on my to-do lists this way, which includes watching purchased box sets of TV shows I enjoy. I know my father will miss being able to come over and watch nascar races but maybe when race season starts they’ll have their satellite TV.

Is anyone else living TV-free?
